Understanding subnets

The essentials of CIDR and subnet masks.

/

CIDR notation

CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) uses a slash and a prefix length to describe how many leading bits identify the network.

#

Subnet mask

A 32-bit number where 1-bits mark the network portion and 0-bits mark the host portion of an IPv4 address.

⇄

Network & broadcast

The first address of a subnet is the network address, the last is the broadcast address. Both cannot be assigned to hosts.

↑

Usable hosts

For /0 to /30 you get 2host bits − 2 usable hosts. For /31 and /32 special rules apply (RFC 3021).
